Protecting Your Property from Timber Infestation
Woodworm is a common issue in homes and buildings, particularly those with older or untreated timber. It refers to the larvae of wood-boring beetles that feed on the wood, creating small holes, tunnels, and weakening the structure over time.
At Down Property Care Ltd, we offer professional woodworm inspections and effective treatment solutions to stop infestations and protect your timber from further damage.
What is Woodworm?
“Woodworm” is a general term used to describe several species of wood-boring insects. The most common in the UK is the Common Furniture Beetle (Anobium punctatum). These beetles lay eggs on or just under the surface of timber. When the larvae hatch, they tunnel through the wood for several years before emerging as adult beetles, leaving behind exit holes and powdery dust known as frass.
Signs of Woodworm Infestation
- Small, round holes (2–5mm) in timber surfaces
- Fine, powdery dust (frass) around the holes
- Crumbly or weak floorboards and joists
- Tunnels visible inside exposed wood
- Beetles emerging from timber (typically between spring and autumn)
Why Prompt Treatment Matters
Untreated woodworm can weaken structural timbers such as joists, beams, and floorboards. Over time, this may lead to expensive repairs or safety concerns. Early detection and treatment are key to avoiding long-term damage.
